Package: apt Version: 0.5.4 Severity: normal It's generally difficult to install packages locally and have apt recognize them as fulfilling a dependency; or it's difficult to install a local version of a package (from a tarball) and have the deb installed as well; or to update a library from a tarball (because some other non-Debianized program requires a newer version than available in Debian). I'm sure you are already aware of problems in these situations.
I believe there must be work-arounds for these problems -- if this is true, it would be nice to list them in apt-howto. The maintainer of that package, Gustavo Noronha Silva <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, wanted me to file this but against apt/dpkg. Perhaps it would be best to direct any solutions to him, so he could document them, or provide a pointer to any existing documentation. -- System Information Debian Release: testing/unstable Kernel Version: Linux lothlorien.colorstudy.net 2.4.14 #1 Fri Nov 9 12:34:44 CST 2001 i686 unknown Versions of the packages apt depends on: ii libc6 2.2.4-6 GNU C Library: Shared libraries and Timezone ii libstdc++2.10- 2.95.4-0.01100 The GNU stdc++ library
