Package: apt
Version: 0.5.4
Severity: normal

It's generally difficult to install packages locally and have apt
recognize them as fulfilling a dependency; or it's difficult to
install a local version of a package (from a tarball) and have
the deb installed as well; or to update a library from a tarball
(because some other non-Debianized program requires a newer version
than available in Debian). I'm sure you are already aware of
problems in these situations.

I believe there must be work-arounds for these problems -- if this
is true, it would be nice to list them in apt-howto. The maintainer
of that package, Gustavo Noronha Silva <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, wanted me
to file this but against apt/dpkg. Perhaps it would be best to
direct any solutions to him, so he could document them, or provide
a pointer to any existing documentation.

There is the equivs package, but this problem is outside the scope of APT,
and is a well known limitation of our packaging system.
