No, actually, it doesn't. When one selects the download link from packages.debian.org, it always constructs an i386 link. I have to change the link manually to the architecture I need. That's why apt is so nice; it already knows the architecture I need, based on the architecture I'm running. I don't understand why this would take additional index space; the architecture is just substituted from a global; apt-get already knows it's looking for a specific architecture.
