 As for your concerns over the phrasing of the message, I don't think it's
all that important.  After a couple times using apt-get, it becomes obvious
what they mean.  I don't think writing software that is so verbose it
doesn't need a manual is a bad idea, and if you don't read the manual, you
have to be willing to figure things out.  OTOH, maybe a wording change could
make things clearer:  "... of archives.  Unpacking will use xMB."  That
implies that the unpacking of the package will increase your disk usage by
that much, rather than that after unpacking, x amount of space will be used,
total.
