Overview of Topology algorithm in apt

Hi, looking for an overview of the algorithm and how its implemented to 
not just determine what needs to be installed/updated/added but also how 
the and/or and version levels of dependencies are taken into account.

I have read the apt source.  Any input is appreciated.
