I think you're the first and only person I've ever heard say anything good about the BDE since I first started with Delphi! And if it works for you that's great! I never even tried it because of what so many others had to say about it and because of all the other alternatives out there. Of course now it's too late because I can't use it in NET. But Firebird has a very good reputation...one of the best out there...and though I don't know how much of that reputation is merely based upon it being free, for lack of anything better at the moment I'm giving it my best shot. As for mistrusting 3rd party developers, well that's just like anything else. Some you can and some you can't. The tough part is figuring out before you get burned which is which! My own study plan had included learning SQL 3 years ago, but the database vendor I was using lied about their products abilities, and much worse, their own! I waited three years for them to get a stable SQL adapter out, just as I did something else they said they had, a .NET ADO adapter, and finally gave up on them. Also their promised documentation was never updated making it impossible to work with their base system without constant questioning on their newsgroup, and who has time to wait a minimum of 24 hours every time they need to know something? Reasons can be acceptable up to a point, but excuses and lies I simply cannot stomach!

I also had a brief look at firebird same time ago and also came to the same conclusion that there are easier things to get started with, without hereby denying it's power, userbase or other possibilities. Currently i'm still using BDE, and will be using it as long as ultimately possible, untill i come across a substitute that provides me with the same ease of installation and implementation and enought guarantees for the future. The main open question for me still is 'who will be my next trustworthy database supplier' ... Over time, multiple alternatives have been presented on this list, but my main goal is not to select the ultimate technological candidate, but a solid supplier, that hopefully will be around for some time, providing the support when needed, with hopefully a large userbase, that can support and enrich itself. I have a very strong distrust regarding third-party suppliers, since i've been left in the dark on a couple of occasions. It's all to easy to present a product or company as being the ultimate solid solution in this era of internet marketing A good poll in the delphi-talk userbase might shed some light on the matter .... And to Robert : as far as your frustration with Firedbird is concerned : the situation speaks for itself wouldn't you think ? my 2 cents worth ....
