No, Bill Gates did not pay me fists full of dollars, but I've entered his garden. (Bill Gates is a smart guy: instead paying me, he paid Borland's programmers!) I'm not using anything better than Delphi - I'm using C#, C++, VB.Net and from time to time Java with Eclipse. I've also switch to analyze and UML - looks good! I still think that Delphi is/was the perfect language and IDE. However this is exactly its vulnerability: a company needs one Delphi programmer, five c# or 15 C++/Java to achieve the same objective. The job market reflects this pretty well in the same way as a highway: a Roll Royce is a lot better car, but you won't see many out there... In the previous company I was alone for five years and I've accomplished every goal the company had. One day it was nothing left to do, and I looked around for another job! No other Delphi job in the near proximity - some companies still doing Delphi programs, but each of them having already one programmer fulfilling their needs... I had to admit that a weaker language will generate more jobs and I enrolled accordingly. It was not easy: .Net is not coming with the wonderful help, source code and examples as Delphi was (until it was also infected with .Net documentation,) but with little more work (but nota bene: paid work, not better but longer) everything can be accomplished... Sympathy? - parallel threads on this forum in the recent past about the present and future (?) of Delphi/Borland should give enough transparent hints.
