How do you do that?

It "seems"? What actually happens? Do you get an exception? Is the
exception from the database, from IBX, from the BDE? Does your data
silently get converted to something else?

The UnitCost field doesn't allow text at all. Its type is Double
Precision. It shouldn't care how the value is represented as text since
it should never be transmitted as text in the first place.
