Thanks to you all, Bernard, Alex and Glenn for providing insights into this.  I 
would certainly only be looking at one-way messaging (no replies from clients), 
and, although I cannot say for certain yet, the connection would probably be 
through a third-party sms gateway provider, since the volume of messaging would 
be relatively small (again, I still need to have numbers clarified for me).  It 
would be even simpler if  I could follow Glenn's idea of using the gateway 
provided by the (most?) network providers (I tested this out on my own phone 
and it worked perfectly well), but wouldn't I need to know not just the phone 
number of each client but also which network they use?

I'll provide more feedback once I have further information myself.  Meantime, 
thanks for helping me out with this . . . . . .
