You may also want to check out Eric Grange's sampling profiler. I have what I thought was good code and, just for fun, I ran Eric's Sampling Profiler. I was surprised to find that I was spending 90% of my time in a routine I had added "just to check something". Checking that routine allowed me to make considerable optimisations.. Perhaps I was lucky to find such an obvious problem.
