I don't know if you've had many dealings with Insurance claims, but
I worked in the claim depts. Of Blue Cross and shield as well as in the
property claims of travelers. I also grew up in my father's brokerage so
believe me when I tell you even if you get documentation like you mentioned,
it won't fly! The fact that you register a piece of software doesn't
necessarily mean that you bought and paid for it. That's another reason for
getting a small business policy and covering a named replacement cost
amount.
I figure I lost in software and equipment about 15,000. And I'm
only getting about 3400 from insurance! As for all my older source
code...if I get a call from someone whom I wrote a custom app for, I'm going
to have to sit down and recreate it from scratch before I can do anything
else. THAT's the real scare because I'll have to go in and work with him as
if I was starting cold! Luckily, most of my clients are small businessmen
themselves and they understand these kinds of problems. But I'm sure at
least one or two will give me a headache sometime in the near future!

Hi Robert,

I really feel sorry for you. It's very painful to see years of hard work be
destroyed by a bunch of no-no's who are to lazy to do some decent work for
their money. You wrote " Luckily insurance will repay me for most of the
hardware, but the code I lost was irreplaceable, and without original
receipts they also won't pay for new installations of my application
installation disks, of which there were many."
What about registrations? I assume most of it was officially registered with
the vendors of the software, so they can certify that you actually purchased
and thus possesed the software.

Hope it works and you'll get over this soon.

Regards,
