Hi fellow Delphians,
I just want to add a pinch of salt to the broth that we have brewing here. >From my experience in the UK and South Africa, Delphi positions are rare. In any case, the perception that Delphi is geared towards developing and maintaining databases in a RAD environment is reinforced by those Delphi vacancies that crop up from time to time. I hardly see a Delphi position that requires some knowledge of Windows APIs such as sockets and hardware. My background is technical with simulation and real time experience but little database experience so I find it very hard to find 'technical' Delphi positions. Most technical software development (for example, low level stuff interfacing with hardware) positions require either C/C++ or Java programming experience. To maximize work opportunities, the solution would be, which I am pursuing right now, (1) is to work on a database project using Delphi that you can show to recruiters or potential employers, and (2) to gain a Sun Certified Java Programmer certification in Java programming - don't get me wrong as I love Delphi but I need work to keep my family from starving! In the UK, in terms of vacancies that I have seen over the last three years, the ratio of Java/C to Delphi is roughly 20 to 1. A shocker, you would have to agree, but that's the harsh reality facing Delphi developers of any description today. Slainte John www.craiglockhart.com/cs -- No virus found in this outgoing message.
