During my recent foray into the wide world of NET programming I have
come to realize just how lucky we, as Delphi developers, really are. Not
simply because we have one of the very best language/IDE combinations
around, or that the VCL is a work of art. Not because Delphi allows us to
code the way we want to, and certainly not because of the wealth of 3rd
party components and libraries available to us at reasonable prices and even
for the asking. No, we're lucky because we have the very best developer
community around!
And before you even think that you might find the same kind of
willingness to help each other, provide examples, and even take the time to
teach another about the basics of OOP, know that it's not like this anywhere
else on the internet!
Now I'm not just talking about here on these Lists that we subscribe
to, although they certainly are to be commended for how they empower us, but
about the overall community of Delphi users and fans all over the world with
whom we can communicate over literally hundreds of venues! Delphi
programmers...where ever they are, and no matter what kind of work they
do...no matter if professionals or just hobbyists, are a breed of coder
unlike any other I have yet experienced!
As I intimated above, I have recently been spending quite a lot of
my time on non-Delphi venues trying to learn NET and work with various
databases. And it's cold out there, believe me! Getting the help one needs
is sometimes quite frustrating, and the attitude shown by many "other"
language enthusiasts can sometimes feel like a walk down 42nd St in New York
City! The warmth and friendliness common to the Delphi community is sorely
missing in such obvious ways as to make you want to run back to Delphi and
hide there forever!
I may be being a little dramatic, but in all seriousness, the next
time you ask for help from anyone in the Delphi community, please be sure to
show your thanks for the time and effort that has been given you. Such
consideration and brotherhood among those in this industry is a rare
commodity, and we must all help to protect it!
