lots of the inexpensive (cheap) video cards - Cirrus, Trident, Alliance etc
etc, have the same issues. The drivers now rely on the directx stuff and
won't run correctly on the vanilla VGA or SuperVGA drivers - they'll give
exactly the symptoms below.
If you can't get the drivers, or can't get them to work, as Kerry suggests,
a better card is the best option. We've founf the 4mb (yes that's all)
Diamond Viper or Matrox cards are fine with new drivers.
The other thing that seems to cause this sort of stuff is cheap main-boards
with fast AGP port rates (100Mhz) with some video cards. Our answer has been
to stick with "Brand" PCI cards until the dust settles, which it seems to be
doing now.

S3 or not, try updating your video drivers, or trying a new card.
