Yes, the D5 IBX has a Cachedupdates implementation that does not use the
BDE, although I have not tried it.
I have been using the FIB which also has the CachedUpdates stuff from which
the IBX was derived (almost a complete copy).
If the D5 IBX cached updates does not work as expected you can still use the
TClientDataset instead.
