C,

OK. So what have we learnt from this??

And you have not wasted bandwidth?

The reason that cross-posting in newsgroups is discouraged is because you
are posting to different AREAS of expertise, say graphics, databases. Cross
posting to a mailing list is different because there are no such areas. Here
it is rather "Reach More People". A subtle distinction, but a distinction no
less. If all the lists were combined would you say I have breached in your
opinion? No I don't think so (then again you would only be subscribed once).
If it makes you that uncomfortable then set up a rule to ignore all mail
from me for the other lists you are subscribed to other than this one. For
all the other people that I am reaching, this is not an issue.

Good man..... When you start telling people what to do and how they should
do it you do get them off side.

If you would like to continue debating this, then please send to my personal
address as this is moving rather quickly into WAY WAY WAY WAY WAY off
topic.....

Apologies to everyone, but I'm going to reply to this.

><RAVE>

I hope you let off some steam. You're obviously annoyed with my reply, but
I'm not sorry for it - I'm annoyed too. I'm not annoyed because you
cross-post, but because you seem to cross-post everything out of habit. And
now you're trying to tell me why you're right to do so.

Cross-posting between mailing lists should be discouraged for the same
reasons that cross-posting between newsgroups is discouraged. Bandwidth is
an issue. At the moment, I can live with your messages because it's just
you. But ask yourself, would you really think it an improvement if lots of
people did it? I cross-subscribe for the same reasons that you do. I'm
just asking that you don't cross-post unless it's mission critical or until
you've given people some time to reply without response - how much is up to
your discretion.

>Besides how do YOU KNOW that the .dsm issue is not critical to me??

I'd love to tell you to get real, but I'll give you the benefit of the
doubt. Do what you think is appropriate.

Carl

C,

<RAVE>

Well yes I could do what you suggest:

Mail List 1

Wait for some time to pass. (What is this magic amount of time exactly??)

Mail List 2

Wait for some time to pass. (What is this magic amount of time exactly??)

Mail List 3

Wait for some time to pass. (What is this magic amount of time exactly??)

Yeah that sure seems like a time saver to me...... Give me a break Carl. I
send to 3 lists at once so as to cover the greatest audience. I DONT have to
make a qualitative judgement about who is capable and who would answer the
question. If you cross subscribe then you will have to live with duplicate
posts. You would get them anyway if I mailed to this list and then decided
that the list was not going to answer the question and mailed list 2 etc.
Besides how do YOU KNOW that the .dsm issue is not critical to me??

Donovan, do you *have* to mail every question you have to three lists?! I
mean, couldn't you just consult them one at a time? I doubt that knowing
what a .dsm file is is mission critical to you, and receiving multiple
copies of any message is somewhat irritating (you'll see what I mean when
you get this reply... :)

Cheers,
Carl

G'Day All,

I see that D5 now has a .dsm file. Can anyone tell me what this file is?

TIA
