IB, Informix, "Cloudscape" (100% pure DB from Informix). Informix's cutdown
version is pretty limited, tho - no BLOBs for example. (Kerry is DEFINATLY
the man to talk to about that tho)
> 2. Able to be "embedded" (silent install as part of app install)
IB, definatly. Ofcourse, others may do it too :)

IB6.0: yes/yes. IB5.6: no/yes. I thought you (SoftTech) had something
arranged?
> 4. Have full and latest JDBC driver
IB: yes :) Interclient works (for me) REALLY well. (OK, so you have to
install interserver as well, but thats not exactly difficult)
Cloudscape: yup.
> 5. Object-relational - although a mapping tool/layer could be used.
You must be joking, right? You either need a full OODB, or something like
TopLink ($15k/server, is Kerry remembers rightly. I thought it was a lot
more.). JDBC's "ResultSet.getObject" might work for you tho.
> 6. Java-friendly (maybe this is covered by 4 and 5 above?)
IB is, Cloudscape should be, being its written IN java!
> 7. Work well in web environment
yup.
> 8. Well supported (from customer point of view)
:)
> 9. Available in release form today (IB 6 is not available in release form
> yet)
Nope, but the engine in the beta is stable as hell. Not production stable
yet (or it wouldn't be beta), but its definatly good enough for development.
5.6 for Linux IS available in release form, tho.
