Have you seen MMTools?  His AVI pack might be what you want:  "This Package
contains components for AVI file processing, which allows users to extract
or combine individual frames, compress AVI streams, play files, etc."

I used other components in the suite for playing audio files, eg. fading one
track while the next started playing - that sort of thing.  They struck me
as being a very professional set of components, with lots of relevant demo
applications as well.
