You can't compare the Windows and Linux communities. They are very
different. You can't expect to convert windows users to use Linux when
there is practically no choice of desktop applications to use. Windows
users are used to variety in applications. For Kylix to succeed you have
to sell lots of units (just like any software product), so you need
developers willing to develop for Linux to buy it but they aren't going to
develop Linux products when there is no market for users to by the
applications they develop. The cycle has to start somewhere. It's the old
argument. Do you want 100 customers paying $4000 for a product or 1000
customers paying $400 for the product.
Linux has no casual user desktop market at the moment. That is going to
have to change for Kylix to be successful. I can just see my sister trying
Linux, damn she bothers me enough when windows messes up, and don't try to
tell me Linux never crashes and is wonderful, blah, blah, blah. I happen
to think Win2000 is wonderful (I am neither against or for either OS). She
would try and install it and give up. Installs are getting better but they
still are woeful.
The first application that someone needs to write is a decent installation
program...
