Agreed. The way I see it, Kylix will first sell to Component builders -
Woll2Woll, Turbopower and the like. When they've ported or rebuilt their
component sets, it's the turn of Delphi application developers, who'll be
able to use the components they used on WIndows.

Finally, when applications appear on the Linux desktop, the users will
come - end-users. So while it's the applications that will attract people to
Linux, there's got to be an acceptance of the platform by developers and
corporate types. Kylix may just make this happen.

There might a foundation release but I think it'll be like a "Standard
edition" - no database support, no CGI/Apache stuff etc. You might even see
Borland doing roadshows, handing out CDs in raffles etc. But Borland will
charge for their products. I think we will initially be able to benefit by
selling custom applications to our customers, rather than by packaged/shrink
wrapped products - it's when the desktop gets popular that packaged products
will sell in a big way. My opinion.

They had given away D3 on a UK magazine, professional version, fully
functional, no time limits kinda thing. I have got a 60 day version of D5
from Borland, so I guess they do ship evals out - can't see that changing
with Kylix.
