Except that java can compile byte code to native code (JIT compiler) and
come in about 95% of "real" speed.

Also, I'd gladly trade off some speed for flexability, stability and the
advanced features Java gives you. Hell, I'm running a 650MHZ PIII here, and
just got a 700MHZ Duron at home for just over 2K (with 256meg + 40gig of
disk). Speed of machine is no longer really an issue. Transmeta has proved
that speed is not always needed - and I'd buy a laptop based on their CPU in
a shot if it does what it claims (double to triple the battery life)

but thats just me.
