Thought as much. The latest bit of inspired advice from Network boffins, is that MS SQL server allows this, so I should re write the app using SQL server as the DB Backend.

This is explicitly disallowed by the IB/FB code. It was discussed at some length of the FireBird developers list, and is not changing for many sane and sensible reasons. JJust concider the performance and network hit alone makes me shudder.
