The main difference to other vulnerabilities is that this one resulted in a significant breach and IP theft from many (30+) Hi-Tech firms. They also used the Christmas breaks, when many security staff who may have normally spotted something were on holidays or short-staffed.
For PR reasons alone it must have been a nightmare for MS. Note it has not been said if Microsoft was one of the 30, but I am guessing it may have been too.
