Actually, I think that may be it....that the control itself cannot
even show the long hint! Even in the help it's mentioned that it's to be
displayed in a statusbar or popup window of it's own. But as far as the
hintstr itself goes, you are supposed to pass the entire str, with both
parts on either side of the vertical bar, to either GetShort or GetLongHint.
It accepts the entire string and returns one side or the other depending
upon the call. So for example, I think I'll try something like this to show
the Long hint:
MyHintHelpForm.hintMemo.Text := GetLongHint(Hintinfo.HintStr);

Are you sure? GetLongHint sounds more like a function that receives a full
hint string and then returns the second portion of it. It that function
really displays a string, I would expect it to be named ShowLongHint, and
to take a few other parameters, such as coordinates for where to show the
hint.
I think a control always displays its short hint. Its long hint is
something you can access from the Application.OnHint event for display
elsewhere, such as a status bar.
