Thanks for that.  Installed the program, loaded the AVI and it says "No
Codec Needed" and "it's already built into the O/S", and "it should play
fine".

Where to next?

Do you have the codec installed for that avi file?
There is no such thing as AVI videos.  Avi is just a container. 
Important is the codec not the container.
Play your avi file with a different player like VLC or BSPlayer.
Does it work?

Also do a Google search for a tool called GSpot. It will tell you what 
coded you need to have installed in order to play that video file.
