You should be fine, I recently setup LearnDelphi.tv with Gmail.
Basically you just need to alter your MX records. If you need less than
10 users you can use the free version, for which you get less storage -
but you certainly get more than you pay for ;-)

Hi Everyone,
Not sure where to turn here but perhaps one of you has done this.
I've got a new domain name and have signed up for hosting aon a
hosting site with exactly what I want - except for the clunky email
client.
I want to use Google Apps for the webmail and the domain hosting site
for everything else. I know that this can be done but not sure how\where.

I'm scared when I start this that Google Apps will take my domain and
move it to their google apps, leaving all my databases and structures
etc on the hosting site without access.
Will Google Apps take my domain host? i.e. if I type in
www.mydomain.com <http://www.mydomain.com> will it now point to google
app's site? or will it leave the domain on the hosting site?
Any other suggestions? I hate (really hate) being forced to have a
browser and typing mail.mydomain.com <http://mail.mydomain.com> to
load their clunky webmail.
