I find the whole not writing of data files under Program files kind of laudable, but a heavy handed way to solve the problem. The effect is I install my programs elsewhere so as to avoid issues of where I can write some data - which is one simple ini file which basically says where everything else is. Was already too much work getting that one file reliably under program files.
Its not helped that the main offender against this noble idea of separation of programs and data folders is Microsoft itself - as they put their MS SQL databases under program files.
