Richard,
I know that this is going to sound mean, but I have no idea how to sugar-coat it.

I use Interbase lots. Interbase is a Borland product.  Interbase doesn't like transactions that live for a long time.  All the TeamB members suggest that I use Client Datasets.

Client Datasets don't work with Interbase tables that use generators (int64 field type).

ergo Delphi doesn't work properly with Interbase.

I thought this was OK with D5 since that used Microsoft's understanding of variants, but now I find that D6 and D7 (which both use a different form of variant handling) also cannot use Client Datasets correctly, Borland components cannot use separate transactions for read and update, so effectively, Borland is selling a non-workable solution.

Can D8 do any better?  I can bring a notebook along, and try it out, but I don't want to be a wet blanket if it doesn't work.

So, I would love to be part of a bug finding mission, but finding the same old bugs would be a little boring.

I know that you have had run-ins with my Boss (he is a philistine) and with me (I am a smartass) but I am still an ardent Borland supporter.  Can you give any hint of whether or not this fundamental failure where Borland Delphi apps are not able to communicate sensibly with Borland Interbase databases has been addressed?

Will buy D8 and D9 and D10 'coz I believe in Borland ( and I dream in Pascal).

Will sell Interbase licenses galore as long as they are priced right.

Trevor

Subject: [DUG] Delphi 8 Bug-Find-A-Thon

Hi there everyone,

This weekend (I know it is late notice) we will be having a bug-find-a-thon. Delphi 8 is very nearly ready, but there are a few (around 18 actually) scenarios that the RAD business unit are really keen to make sure people test. So what do I want from you? If you plan to be in Auckland on Saturday the 12th (that is this Saturday) then I would really like you to come along, bring your PC (we have a few monitors but bringing a monitor would also be a good idea) and help us test Delphi 8!!!

So the details:

Where: Level 4, 187 Queen St, Auckland. You may need to ring me or text me to come down and get you - I will try and ensure that a few people have card access to the building. My cellphone is 021467747.
When: Saturday 12th - 10am - 4pm - it may go later if we are on a roll
What do you need: A PC - having the .NET 1.1 framework already installed and one of the supported databases is good (MS SQL Server, DB2, InterBase, etc) If you want to do pair programming that is cool as well, bring a friend and sit together.
What will be provided: Food, juice, water and soft drinks. We'll try and cater for everyone (its coming out of my pocket though, so don't expect anything too expensive!)
What else: You will need to sign an non-disclosure form when you come through the door (if you haven't already). If you have any Delphi applications that you want to try and port over, any VCL or such things (remember, no WM_ or assembly code allowed) bring them along as well. The RAD Asia/Pacific rep has said he will try and come up with something special for the testers.

I need at least FIVE people, I would LOVE 25. Please RSVP as soon as you can  - AND PASS IT ALONG TO YOUR FRIENDS!
