Richard,
I should have mention that base system functionality i.e .NET does fall outside the criteria - it is used to apply to 3rd party components.
 
Mind you we have to work around known bugs and issues with ADO - but at least we can work around them in a almost transparent fashion or apply a wrapper/adapter. The issues with MIDAS did not fall into this category.

A deciding factor was that there is no available source to the Midas DLL, hence we could not control the final quality of the product. Basically it has become policy that we only use components etc where there is source available. Once burned twice shy.
