Richard, I should have mention that base system functionality i.e .NET does fall outside the criteria - it is used to apply to 3rd party components.   Mind you we have to work around known bugs and issues with ADO - but at least we can work around them in a almost transparent fashion or apply a wrapper/adapter. Basically it has become policy that we only use components etc where there is source available. Once burned twice shy.
