What is the application, database size, number of users and style of implementation?  This will have more bearing on your decision than the database itself.

MySQL does not have stored procedures, but is fast, simple and easily installed.

MSDE has some licencing issues if it is ever used in conjunction with MS SQLServer - the fine print is quite confusing.  It is fully featured, but has spped issues when used in a multiuser environment.

Subject: [DUG] Offtopic - but

Hi all This is offtopic, but not everyone gets offtopic email.

I am just doing a think about databases at the moment. My app. currently uses Access which is fine, but at some stage this year, prob. early if I can, I will look at moving it over to a diff. DB....maybe.
At this stage, the leading contender is MSDE, or even SQL Server, but Prob. MSDE
I am not looking at Interbase, although IB7 looks interesting now that it supports temp tables, but the whole client setup thing makes it less attractive.

The other DB that comes to mind is MySQL.
Now I dont know much at all about it, I have installed it, but that was it.
Is it a viable contender to MSAccess or MSDE?  (and you need to answer this wiht out an anti M$ hate on too..hehehe)
One of the things that I seem to remember about MySQL when I first looked at a few years back, was it did not have Stored Procedures. Has this changed?

What would be an advantage to use MySQL over Access or MSDE, apart form the fact that its a DB Server and its free etc.

Cheers,

Jeremy Coulter
