Have a look at PostGres..  A free (Open Souce) but fully functional (Referential integrity, triggers, stored procedures(called functions - not the same a sql server but once you get the hang of it pretty much just as powerful) and Views as well. etc.

MySQL is a great database if you are not concerned about the above and wish to have a fairly reliable and easy back end database.

Delphi apps using PostGres however  will require the ODBC driver unless you wish to  pay the $149 US for the Delphi DBExpress driver.

However If in doubt us the Native Paradox Tables (lol).

$0.02  Less tax, Acc Levies, Auckland Road user tax etc  =  $0.00

Subject: [DUG] Offtopic - but

Hi all This is offtopic, but not everyone gets offtopic email.

I am just doing a think about databases at the moment. My app. currently uses Access which is fine, but at some stage this year, prob. early if I can, I will look at moving it over to a diff. DB....maybe.
At this stage, the leading contender is MSDE, or even SQL Server, but Prob. MSDE
I am not looking at Interbase, although IB7 looks interesting now that it supports temp tables, but the whole client setup thing makes it less attractive.

The other DB that comes to mind is MySQL.
Now I dont know much at all about it, I have installed it, but that was it.
Is it a viable contender to MSAccess or MSDE?  (and you need to answer this wiht out an anti M$ hate on too..hehehe)
One of the things that I seem to remember about MySQL when I first looked at a few years back, was it did not have Stored Procedures. Has this changed?

What would be an advantage to use MySQL over Access or MSDE, apart form the fact that its a DB Server and its free etc.

Cheers,

Jeremy Coulter
