For a start widescreen gives you less
screen real estate than you would expect (eg 15.4” widescreen is actually
smaller in terms of square inches than 15” normal ratio). Which is really
irritating as salespeople seem to think they are doing you a favour by selling
you this widescreen laptop which actually has a smaller screen than the laptop
you bought 6 years ago… If you write documents then I find
widescreen format a pain – lines become difficult to read when they are
more than 12 inches wide anyway and I like to be able to see as much vertical
height of the document as possible – wide screen reduces this. The only benefits I see from widescreen
format are: - Watching DVDs which I practically
never do on my computer/laptop – other people may have different usage. - Putting two or more windows side
beside, such as two documents (assuming your screen is big enough that you can
do this and still read both documents). That said I have my desktop setup with two
normal ratio (4:3) LCD screens side by side and I like that. But that is mainly
because that gives sufficient screen real estate to put multiple windows side
by side (eg Delphi on one window, the running program on another) without
having to make everything microscopic and unreadable. David. From:
[EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Colin/Mina Hi, I need to purchase a new PC and it's been
suggested that I choose a widescreen monitor as being the best option but I'm
not so sure. I have an LCD projector in my home theatre (so I don't need a
screen to watch multimedia on my PC) however it has a native 16:9
format which isn't always the best. Changing the format is a pain, I have to change
the projector's settings and slide it towards the screen for 3 x
4 viewing so I don't bother. As a result, for TV viewing, footballers look
chubby like a rugby ball on its side. Q1 Will this be a disadvantage with a widescreen
monitor? Will my CAD applications draw squashed circles or can I set them
up to maintain the correct ratios? Q2 Will I lose room heightwise and hence have to
reduce the vertical picture size? Q3 I will probably gain (spare) space
horizontally but is this going to be distracting or can it be put to use by
better arranging the desktop, or even allowing room to put an
application's menus and toolbars? Q4 I have a considerable investment in CAD
applications which I don't want to have to replace for the sake of a new
monitor so should I go for it. Recommendations please. Regards Colin |
