So this is where we (denemo) have an advantage. E.G. We can write a script that adds \neohead before the appropriate type of notes in the hook that is called before print, and removes them after. Alternatively (more complex for us, not knowing so much LilyPond) I think you can write a LilyPond music function that will expect a chord to follow and do the right thing.
