Several factors, and complementing what Jason said: 1. Do you have HOSTNAME_LOOKUP set in your configuration? 2. How long is your /etc/hosts.deny list? (roughly one half of `wc -l /etc/hosts.deny`) 3. Do you know that python is a resource hog?
