HOSTNAME_LOOKUP=NO

is in my config. as for hosts.deny they range anywhere from about 200 to 900

Several factors, and complementing what Jason said:

1. Do you have HOSTNAME_LOOKUP set in your configuration?

2. How long is your /etc/hosts.deny list?
(roughly one half of `wc -l /etc/hosts.deny`)

3. Do you know that python is a resource hog?  CPU use is very high on all
python programs I use.
