Trying to do more testing I just changed python to 2.5.2, both 2.5.x 
versions are tagged as unstable or untested for 64-bit processors in 
Gentoo, so I did go through the tests and made sure none of the relevant 
network tests failed.

Thanks for your reply, I'm keeping sync on, perhaps the problem is what 
Phil describes, I just don't see how the time-out works some times and 
then doesn't.
