Not sure why you need to create any regular expressions. I got DenyHosts running without any tinkering whatsoever.

Still, I would try this at the commandline as you may then see what is failing...

But.. do mac's have commandlines? I suppose so, but doesn't Apple wanted to keep everything under the hood? :)
