Start with DH's log, in Linux its /var/log/denyhosts, look for the startup of service where all the values for the parameters are shown, check those for sanity. Then make a test or wait for a failed attempt (watching both secure.log and denyhosts log). A successful login will look like "loginattempt: INFO resetting count..."; an unsuccessful (number of times varies depending if it is in restricted and threshold) looks like "denyhosts : INFO new denied hosts:..."
