I don't think the autoloading has changed. The first call to
DriverManager.getConnection() makes the engine boot, but the driver has to be
registered before that, otherwise the getConnection() call wouldn't know which
driver to use. If you call DriverManager.getDrivers() when you have derby.jar
on the classpath, you'll see that it returns an instance of
org.apache.derby.jdbc.AutoloadedDriver even if you haven't called
DriverManager.getConnection() first.
