That's a very good point. I don't want to prematurely optimize.
Your proposed implementation is straightforward and clear.
Let's see how the testing goes; maybe you can look at some ways to try
to make sure that we exercise multiple-open code paths in our new tests
and we can see if we hit any problems or not.
