general I don't think derbyall is an ideal performance regression test

Agreed, the "duration %" should only be read as what it really is: *how long did the test need this time*.
Of course if we see a stable change we should seek to explain it.

as work is currently underway  to both add new tests and improve
performance of  the derbyall runs.

Right now we fly without a net for performance.  Does anyone run any
regular performance regression tests, especially ones for which  they
might be able to post results?
