I can create a patch and upload it to DERBY-614.

That would be great.

I will spend some time trying to make a repro for this; I
believe it should be possible, but I don't want to hold up
your work.

Once I am able to create a test which demonstrates this problem,
I can then add that test to the test suite in a separate patch
to DERBY-614.
