It's something Jan Holešovský is working on -- he asked me to design it.
The idea is to have the status bar hidden by default, moving key
functionality elsewhere.

Frankly, the status bar is a relic of the past, with modern UIs dropping
it. If status information needs to be relayed to the user, it is now
usually displayed in a small floating box in the bottom left corner of the
window that disappears once the info is irrelevant. The status bar was
never meant to carry clickable elements.
