Hi Helmut,you reached out to the design mailing list focusing on visual improvements and questions regarding user experience. So not really suited to the "rant".
So my first recommendation is to use https://ask.libreoffice.org/ (there is a German channel too) to find a solution. You could ask "How to embed images with relative links? My workflow is... I do... and fail at... What can I do to solve it?" The next step would be to file a bug report under https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/.
If you search our Bugtracker you will find many tickets, eg. [1,2] - and explanations why things are difficult. Don't remember what exactly causes trouble with relative links, but IIRC it wasn't removed and should work.
Daily developer versions can be found here [3]. It runs flawless in parallel (on Linux I just extract the content of RPMs somewhere else but /lib64/libreoffice/), although it uses the same user configuration. Portable versions can be found here [4].
