I think the current SSL/TLS/secure email, STARTTLS etc. settings in most (maybe all, but certainly in all applications I have used) are too confusing and could be simplified a lot. I actually thought about this a long time ago and wrote a proposal. Maybe now is the time to revisit that and maybe spend a little time implementing it:
