Sounds like you have come up with a slightly different design, so this
may not be an issue any more, but I'll just finish my thought.

In Windows (and possibly GTK, can't remember right now) it's a lot more
pervasive than just the text fields. Those GUIs allow mouseless use and so
every widget can be "selected" for keyboard navigation, which is indicated
by the dotted outline around it.
I think so long as we don't also use a dotted line to represent
selection in Chandler or Scooby, we should be okay.
You might get the dotted line with wxWidgets whether you want it or not,
for example around the default button in a dialog, because that's how
Windows is going to draw it.
