Agreed, I think I'm just having an allergic reaction to having an extra Dashboard collection. Would 'All' include NOW and LATER items as well? I think it should, otherwise Search might get really frustrating.

If that's the case, then we're talking about having 2 Collections that would look very similar:

1. 'All' contains NOW, LATER and DONE
2. 'Dashboard' contains only NOW or NOW and LATER

I feel that with open/close-able sections, the Dashboard already has a built-in notion of 'Stuff I need NOW' versus 'Everything else'. I have a feeling that most people will have the LATER section closed as well. Or they're NOW section will be so big that they won't be able to see the LATER section anyway.

Or to put it another way: I'm not sure that having separate collections in the sidebar is the best affordance for separating: 'Stuff I need now' versus 'Everything else' (workflow-interruption issues I mentioned in my last email).

However, I think over time, an Archive collection would be a nice thing to have (as a way of isolating obsolete stuff.) How hard would that be? to essentially define a 2nd Trash collection.

However, I still don't think the gmail model is as different from your dashboard model as you're describing. The fundamental concept of "this is stuff that I need now" - i.e. your inbox, and "this is everything else" i.e. search or the "All Mail" link
