It sounds to me like Jared is subscribing to a read only calendar here.

Correct.

I seem to remember that we wanted to be able drag read-only events onto
other calendars but this was difficult for some reason.

This was sort of the idea from my post, that it'd be nice if I could "do the
right thing" and at least make a copy.

I agree. I will look into it a bit further. You did find a valid bug with the popup so in the meantime we can make sure that gets fixed.

Even better would be if that copy was linked to the original in some way, such that if Ted (the colleague) deleted the item for a week and synced, my
copy would be updated.

The collaboration workflows already support this, I imagine, if it's driven by Ted and he sends the event (via email) and then I can respond (via email).

Is there no way for me, as the "downstream" collaborator, to see an event in a read-only shared collection and track that item without double clicking
and entering in all the same info?

The spec does seem clear that there's nothing I can do with an event in a read-only collection. I note you can select an event in that collection,
but what action can you take with that selected event?

None except for being able to see the rest of the info in the detail view - alarms, notes etc.

(I of course understand if this is outside Beta scope; the intent is only to
explore this usage scenario and see how Chandler supports it.)
