I think this is a little different from re-sorting, it's more like committing changes. From the users perspective, the main upshot of this will probably be that sorting shifts itself around. So in that sense, it's a re-sorting, but it's not like sorting emails in a mail client, I think it's more like sorting rows in a spreadsheet. I think that button is really about refocusing attention. I'm not exactly clear on what the latest proposal is (there's a meeting about this this afternoon), but we may be putting updated items at the top of your dashboard without changing their triage status. So, for instance, if I'm working on a Later item that I'm sharing with you, and you make a change, when sharing updates that item, it will start showing up in the Now section, even though its triage status is still later. I got confused by what purge meant at first, but the proposed icon for Purge/Triage/Commit/Apply/Refocus/whatever the heck we're going to call it really worked for me when I looked at it. It immediately drew together (for me, at least) what was going to happen if it was pressed by suggesting the moving around of colors. I think it'll be clearer what's going on when that icon grays itself out (currently you can't tell if there's anything to be purged). I suppose if we wanted to leverage that icon, we could use more of our scarce dashboard real estate for an individual-item-purge-icon column. It would be greyed out if there weren't any triage changes to apply for that item, but it would be full color if there was a relevant triage status change. That would have the added benefit that people could click on the icon to purge individual items, and sort to see which items needed purging.
