Forwarding bugzilla discussion to the list. This issue here is whether we should move items to the Trash, even if they have been explicitly put into other user-defined collections by the user. This is in the context of a user who has decided to "Delete a collection and the items in it."

I'm worried it will be too complicated to explain that we'll only delete the ones that aren't also in another user-defined collection. (e.g. in addition to the Dashboard, an item could also have been automatically picked up by the In and/or Out collections).

In these situations, my inclination would be to follow what we say we're going to do to a T - and then let the user fish items out of the Trash if they want to. Or, they can always select all the items in the collection and de-select the few they don't want to delete and then delete the rest. In other words, there are ways around this issue?

I don't think we can assume that items that have been explicitly added to another user-defined collection shouldn't be moved to the Trash.

Maybe it would help if we think about specific use cases of when this might happen: a. I create a collection to pull together stuff just for my vacation. When my vacation gets cancelled, I want to delete the collection AND the events and tasks I already put in there.

b. I subscribe to a shared Home collection and it falls into disuse and I want to get rid of it and its items.

What about others?

Either way, I think collection deletion will be quite rare. How often do you delete folders from your email app and/or calendars from your calendar app?

That should have read "isn't in any collections besides the Dashboard".

Do you really think all items in the collection should go to the trash,
even if some of the items have been added to other collections? That
seems wrong to me.
